What Is Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide?

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, or MEKP, is an agent that cures resins and gel coats that are used in fiberglass swimming pools. The pool’s gel coat is applied as a liquid using spray painting equipment.

MEKP is used in a 1-3% solution to act as a hardening agent, turning the “paint” of a gel coat into a solid and durable top layer of a fiberglass pool.

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is an organic compound, and it’s highly caustic. It’s a severe skin irritant, and prolonged exposure can cause blindness or corrosive damage. Manufacturers take extreme care when using MEKP as a catalyst for the gel coat.
